Keep your puppy’s feeding and walking times as consistent as possible during the training period—and permanently as much as possible—to avoid throwing him off schedule. In other words, during the seven days (and for several weeks after until the dog’s habits are established) don’t feed him at 7:30 A.M. on weekdays and then sleep late on weekends, and don’t confine him all day while you are at work and then take him out constantly on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Eventually you will return home one night to find no mistakes. And when that happens, you can celebrate.

Dogs want to be with their masters, not isolated from them, so it’s important to give your puppy plenty of exercise and attention while you are at home so he does not become discontented and bored while you are gone. He should be well exercised before and after confinement. Get up earlier or allot time after work to cuddle your puppy and give him a little romp. Once he’s completely housebroken, take him for long walks or a run in the park. Your dog should not object to being confined if he’s toned up and contented. This time spent playing with and loving your puppy will be repaid by his faithfulness and loving companionship.
